    Hi

When trying to record digitally from my MD desk to the EWS using the optical in, I receive no signal. I'm sure the problem doesn't come from the MD desk, so what am I doing wrong with the EWS settings?

    Thanks for your help,

Oh, that's "need" not "nedd" in the thread title. But I'm sure you had understood ;^)

Are you shure, that under "Input selection" the knob "optical" is on?

Maybe I should add that I've already tried every single setting I could think of, and that I browsed through lots of documentation before coming here asking this question...
    i.e. you're my last resort!

BTW is there anywhere I could find the EWS manuals online in english? Mine are in German and I don't speak German...

    Thanks!

On the EWS Stress Control Panel (www.ews64.com) we have in the Download section several documents available. However: NO manuals. Sorry. But there is a file 'ewsrouting.zip' that could be of some use to you, so that you can check if you made the proper routings on the control panel. I think you better send an email to Terratec in which you ask them to send you an English manual (they DO exist).
Some suggestions you probably already tried (but most problems are often caused by the most stupid and small things, is my experience wink
    - Did you check the optical cable? (light coming out?)
    - No dust in the optical input?
    - Are you sure the sample rates of your MD and the EWS match? I'm not sure about this, but I guess you have to set the sample rate of the EWS to the same rate as your MD. Anyway, with my DAT-device the optical IN/OUT of the EWS works perfectly. And it is a great way to by-pass the built in copy protection of the DAT wink

    Good luck,
    Arnoud

    Thanks for your reply.
Light comes out of the cable, there is no dust in the input, and sample rates match. The control panel shows that the connexion is actually detected, but there is no signal.

    Lightbulb

Try changing the sync-source to MD device (from the upper right corner.. NO, NOT THE X BUTTON wink), when BOTH EWS and MD device change sample-rate together, then they have "founded" each other.

Then there's other thing, does your MD device S/PDIF signal, because some devices may use AES/EBU or even ADAT/TASCAM signal.
Also, if you have optical/coax-converter, signal doesn't always work.

Then there's this worst scenario... your front-panel is defeat. Hopefully you have some friend with DAT device, they seem to work "nearly" always with EWS.

I hope this helps you at least a little.
